I was four days in, curled up on a twin mattress at some detox spot with puke stains on the floor and Jesus quotes on the wall. My skin was itching so bad I wanted to tear it off. I hadn’t slept. I couldn’t eat. I swore my dealer was the only person who ever “got me.” Then a nurse walked in, shoved a water bottle at me, and said, “You don’t need your dealer. You need fcking water.” I hated her for that. Then I drank the water. And it was the first sip of clarity I’d had in years.
